What You Need to Know Before Hiring A Brand & Website Designer

Today’s topic is: What You Need to Know Before Hiring a Brand & Website Designer!

This is really important to get into because I feel like so many people are lost as to what is required and what’s needed when it comes to hiring a designer, and what the process is like.

Regardless of who you want to hire, there are 4 things that you need to know before you start your research:

  1. Your Style
  2. Your Timeline
  3. Your Expectations
  4. Your Budget

Your Style

I think that style is a huge thing that many people miss when they begin their search for a brand and website designer. It’s important to think about the vision that you have in mind for your brand, and then check out the designer’s portfolio for previous projects to see if they align with what you’re looking for.

All designers do not have the same style, so if you’re looking for something ‘dark and emotive’ you shouldn’t hire someone who typically showcases bright and airy designs. While some designers may want the challenge, generally speaking, most designers have a signature style for a reason.

Your Timeline

When it comes to brand and website design, it is not a quick and overnight process if you want real, tangible results. The best thing that you can do to prepare for this process, is look for a designer way ahead of schedule, or be ready to pay a rush fee. For example, my signature branding process takes up to 12 weeks.

Using the same process over and over has allowed me to create a signature package where I know how long things will take, and what elements are essential to aid in the results that my clients are looking for.

So if it isn’t already listed on the sales page, be prepared to ask: how long does this type of project usually take, even with revisions? Another thing to also take into consideration is any vacations or travel time you have coming up that could delay feedback and ultimately alter your project timeline.

Last thing to consider with timeline: if you are working with a successful or popular designer, most of the time they are booked out in advance

Your Expectations

You need to know exactly what you’re looking for/what deliverables you are expecting from working with a designer. Are you getting a full brand identity and website design or are you just looking for one or the other? Be clear about what you are looking for before you approach them. If you don’t know all of the details, that’s fine – most designers will be able to guide you in the right direction as far as what deliverables will be best suited for your goals.

Your Budget

Last but not least, you need to know how much you are willing to invest in a design project. I wouldn’t let this be the thing to turn you away from a designer. But you may need to save up in advance. Note that some designers do book projects out ahead of time, and many do offer payment plans.

Branding isn’t an investment that you should take lightly or simply go with the cheapest person.

You should choose a designer based on the results that they are able to give you and your business.

Do their previous clients have similar brand/business goals to you? Do they seem to have a process that makes you feel comfortable in making the investment? Does their work look like what you can envision for your brand?
